My question about young Cathy

Ok, so I have a quick question about one of the early "stories" about Cathy, specifically the one about her and the two boys in the barn. Are we to believe that the ten year old Cathy orchestrated the sexual situation? I mean, I understand that she is not a good person... possibly evil... maybe even the devil incarnate, but this scene really did disturb me. I just want to know how other people interpreted this scene.

  1. Yeah, I took this to mean she orchestrated the whole thing in order to establish power among her peers. It was definitely a disturbing scene, and I think it was meant to show the level of her monstrosity. Also, I think it was meant to dehumanize her, in a way, so that we did not sympathize with her later. Hmmm.

  3. Just randomly revisiting this page way late - I actually really liked the barn scene in establishing her character. She's now, to my mind, the best example of psychopathy in literature, and I think this idea of such a person orchestrating such a scenario isn't too far from the standard animal torturing, fire setting red flags talked about on late night serial killer biopics. I think it's an unfortunate reality that little girls probably learned, maybe earlier then than now in our monitoring and reporting world, that they might be sexualized, and for a person like Cathy, it fit her development.
